A young Peter Hastings opens a quaint antiques shop in downtown Chicago specializing in rustic potbelly stoves. Determined to grow the business, he starts serving lunch to his customers. Queues begin to stretch outside the door. The little antiques shop becomes quite the lunchtime getaway, complete with toasty warm sandwiches, homemade desserts and live music.
Almost two decades on, the beloved corner shop gains a cult following. A young entrepreneur buys the business. With his sights firmly set on spreading the Potbelly Love across the country, he soon opens the second Potbelly shop.
10th Potbelly opens in the US
Potbelly celebrates its 100th shop opening and is recognized as one of “America’s 500 Fastest Growing Private Companies” by Inc. Magazine.
The Potbelly portfolio has doubled, now serving sandwiches, salads and soup at over 200 locations in the United States and marking 30 years since Potbelly first opened in Chicago.
Taking a bite out of the Big Apple, Potbelly lands in New York City as we continue to open more and more shops across the States, with over 350 locations nationwide at this point. The Potbelly love also goes global, signalling the brand’s international expansion by opening numerous shops in the Middle East.
With over 350 shops now in operation, Potbelly crosses the pond and lands in London with the first ever European opening. The flagship opens this summer in Europe’s biggest shopping mall, Westfield Stratford City, setting up shop along ‘The Street’.
